On the Pacific coast of Panama, the friends took a dugout canoe to avoid the impenetrable rain forest, and then hostile Indians, of the Darien, headed into the Pacific, got lost and found themselves surrounded by sharks, just as a severe storm set in. Somehow, they survived. The ocean current and incoming tide carried them to Jurado on the northwest coast of Columbia, where they lived for a time among local Indians.
