She is often regarded as one of the pioneers of detective fiction in America and has been called "the mother of the detective novel" for her contributions to the genre. She achieved notable success with her first novel, The Leavenworth Case, and went on to write many other detective stories that captivated readers. Green married Charles Rohlfs in 1884, and they remained together until her death on April 11, 1935, in Buffalo, New York.
