However, when the global financial crisis hit, Lauren lost her job as an attorney. With no available work for her in the legal field she sees this as an opportunity to follow her passion and try her hand at painting portraits for musicians. She then meets five other artists: Heather, a jazz singer; Lizbeth, an illustrator; Jasmine, a folk rock singer, songwriter; Amber an actress; and Josie, a saxophone musician. Together, they form a lasting friendship, and weather the storms that come as a result of putting yourself out there, including fear of success, addiction, mental illness, politics, aging in the public eye and of course death.
