Three days, thirty mistakes, two sleuthing anxious and imaginative dog walkers, 12 year- old Stephen Noble and sparkling genius girl Renée Kobai, small and big dogs Ping and Pong and a cast of wacky neighbor characters all come together for a romp of a mystery that even reluctant readers will chuckle over. Teachers and parents will enjoy the inherent celebration of error which acts to encourage children to reach and stretch and embrace new opportunities. To embrace not fear failure! As per book I, The Best Mistake Mystery, the story takes place over three days, with numbered mistakes, instead of chapter headers. Usually ten mistakes occur per day, some lead to or act as clues, and after the third day, there's an aftermath chapter to help the reader sort through the clues and conclusions. Twelve-year old Stephen Noble shares his dog walking duties with classmate Renée Kobai although he's not sure the arrangement works. Short and as yappy as Ping, the Jack Russell, Renée can be just as stubborn and controls him well whereas Stephen is tall and quieter like Pong, the greyhound rescue. Just not as calm. Continuing to count mistakes (to calm himself over making them), Stephen observes neighborhood art disappearing, creepy Halloween decorations, the Stream of Fish display, Grumpy, and worst of all, Mr. Rupert's specially crafted mailbox. Mr. Rupert is the scary vigilante who dresses in camouflage gear and patrols the neighborhood. His Cadillac displays a Support the Troops bumper sticker and he's a member of the reserve rumoured to own a gun. Mr. Rupert claims his surveillance camera will reveal the mailbox thief and vows to catch him. Because Stephen delivered his newspaper that week, he fears he'll be on the video footage. Of course, Renée's brother Attila (a popular name in Hungary that suits him well) gets questioned for the crimes which causes lots of drama at their home. He's already been found guilty of spray painting graffiti on the high school wall: a picture of a tank crashing out. Renée begs to sleep over at Stephen's. Almost as anxious as Stephen, she learns to knit along with his father but she's not calm enough to go to sleep. Instead she wakes Stephen to chase after three ninja escaping with a wagon full of Grumpy the lawn dwarf from the neighbor's backyard. These ninja drop a black cap in the school parking lot. Stephen and Renée don't catch up with them. In fact they need to flee Mr. Rupert. Next day at school there's a lockdown because of a gun found in the library. Stephen worries that Mr. Rupert is after him. When the police question Stephen and Renée at school about any suspicious people they may have seen while walking the dogs, they also ask about the missing Stream of Dream fish, a couple of which the dogs found and Stephen carries around in his pocket. His nervous behavior and the fact that their K9 officer sniffs his pants pocket, help them to discover the fish. Things aren't looking great for Stephen and Renée. Too make things worse, while in their charge Ping makes an exuberant leap to lick a young suspect (Star Loughead)'s face, catches a tooth in her nose ring. Even though Ping and Pong identify her as one of the ninja when they sniff her out via the found black cap, Stephen and Renée can't reveal her identity because she threatens to tell Animal Control about her nose bite. Not only will Noble Dog Walking lose a client. but Ping will be deemed a dangerous dog! He'll have to wear a muzzle at all times and will be banished from off leash parks. Still Stephen and Renée must solve the crime! A contest reception at the art gallery feels like the perfect place to gather all the suspects, sort through the clues and declare the criminal. Turns out the missing mailbox, Halloween decorations, lawn dwarf and Stream of Dreams fish were taken to win a bet between two artists. It's been transformed into the prize winning (People's Choice) installation Stolen Art. In fact four art lovers including Renée's brother and Star Loughead are guilty of the crime but no one wants to press charges. They love having their personal yard art celebrated at the art gallery. The gun in the library turns out to be a (non-firing) replica of Mr. Rupert's father's World War II Browning HP which he dropped while visiting his girlfriend in the library. The police do want to press charges for "carrying an imitation of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to public peace." The gun caused a lockdown, after all, and certainly a lot of anxiety on Stephen's part. Mystery solved, dogs and humans safe again, Stephen Noble realizes what a perfect arrangement and friendship he has with Renée Kobai. She pushes him into doing things he wouldn't ordinarily do. Also he understands how important art is, not only to his neighbours, but all people and even animals.
