Produktbeschreibung
In "The Autobiography of St. Ignatius," the venerable founder of the Society of Jesus offers an intimate account of his spiritual journey, marked by a profound transformation from a life of worldly ambition to one of devout service. Written in the first person, this work reflects a candid and reflective literary style, weaving elements of narrative and theological exploration. Ignatius's narrative is situated within the context of the Counter-Reformation, offering insights into the spiritual exercises that would influence Catholic spirituality and education profoundly, while also serving as a testament to his resolute faith in the face of adversity. St. Ignatius of Loyola, born in 1491, experienced a radical shift in his life following an injury during a battle that led him to a period of deep reflection. This personal crisis catalyzed his development of the Spiritual Exercises, a foundation for Jesuit spirituality promoting discernment and contemplation. His experience as a soldier, coupled with his later dedication to the Church and the formation of the Jesuit order, framed his narrative and the principles of service, education, and missionary work that he so passionately endorsed. This autobiography is highly recommended for readers interested in the confluence of personal spirituality and historical context. It serves not only as a foundational text for understanding Jesuit spirituality but also provides profound insights into the human search for meaning, making it indispensable for theologians, historians, and anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of faith and personal transformation.

Autorenporträt
Ignatius of Loyola, venerated as Saint Ignatius of Loyola, was a Spanish Catholic priest and theologian, who, with six companions, founded the religious order of the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits), and became its first Superior General, in Paris in 1541.Ignatius envisioned the purpose of the Society of Jesus to be missionary work and teaching. In addition to the vows of chastity, obedience and poverty of other religious orders in the church, Loyola instituted a fourth vow for Jesuits of obedience to the Pope, to engage in projects ordained by the pontiff. Jesuits were instrumental in leading the Counter-Reformation.As a former soldier, Ignatius paid particular attention to the spiritual formation of his recruits and recorded his method in the Spiritual Exercises (1548). In time, the method has become known as Ignatian spirituality. He was beatified in 1609 and was canonized as a saint on 12 March 1622. His feast day is celebrated on 31 July. He is the patron saint of the Basque provinces of Gipuzkoa and Biscay as well as of the Society of Jesus. He was declared patron saint of all spiritual retreats by Pope Pius XI in 1922.
