IN the spring of 1900 I paid my first visit to the Shetlands, and most of what I then saw is embodied in my work Bird Watching. Two years afterwards I went there again, arriving somewhat later, and it is the notes made by me during this second stay which fill the greater number of these pages.

Edmund Selous was a British scientist and author (14 August 1857 - 25 March 1934). He was generally regarded as one of the foremost authorities on the topic during his time and is best known for his writings on bird observation and other facets of natural history. Selous authored a number of works on the subject, including "Bird Watching" and "The Bird Watcher in the Shetlands," which are still well-liked by bird watchers today. Selous was a skilled artist and photographer in addition to being a writer, and his photographs beautifully captured the wonder and beauty of the natural world. Selous's artwork is still praised for its meticulousness, enthusiasm for the topic, and understanding of the natural world. He is still adored by both naturalists and bird watchers, and his legacy has inspired and informed countless generations of wildlife lovers all over the globe.
