The story is set just after the Union of Scotland and England, in the Liddesdale hills of the Scottish Borders, familiar to Scott from his work collecting ballads for The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border. The main character is based on David Ritchie, whom Scott met in the autumn of 1797. Autorenporträt
Walter Scott and Napoleon were born two years apart on 15 August (1771 and 1796 respectively). Napoleon single-handedly created modern warfare, but Scott did the same for adventure stories and modern history. He lived in Scotland and was regularly paid US$ 1.5 million per book with books being translated simultaneously in many languages.
