The Cabala is a semiautobiographical novel based on Thornton Wilder's time at the American Academy in Rome during the 1920s. First published in 1926, it launched his reputation as one of his generation's finest storytellers.

Thornton Wilder was an American playwright and novelist. He won three Pulitzer Prizes for his novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey and his plays Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth. He also won a National Book Award for his novel The Eighth Day.
