James Russell Lowell (1819–1891) was a distinguished American Romantic poet, essayist, diplomat, editor, and educator, associated with the Fireside Poets—a group which also included the likes of Longfellow and Whittier. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Lowell graduated from Harvard College in 1838 and went on to obtain a law degree from Harvard Law School. Despite this, his passion lay in literature, which became his lifelong pursuit. Lowell's poetry is characterized by its use of New England dialect, satirical wit, and political engagement, as demonstrated in 'The Biglow Papers' (1848 and 1867). His commitment to the abolitionist cause, as well as social and political reforms, was a constant motif in his works.
