His father, Edward White Benson, was the Archbishop of Canterbury, while his mother was Mary Sidgwick Benson, a noted suffragist. Benson was educated at Marlborough College and King's College, Cambridge. His literary career, spanning from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, was prolific and diverse, encompassing a wide range of genres from social satires to supernatural fiction. Best known for his Mapp and Lucia series, a set of novels satirizing upper-middle-class society in England, Benson also excelled in the realm of supernatural and horror.
