The slow-rolling winter's sun rose coldly, far to the south, riding up from behind the saw-toothed Sierras of Mexico to throw a silvery halo on Gadsden, the border city. A hundred miles of desert lay in its path—a waste of broken ridges, dry arroyos, and sandy plains—and then suddenly, as if by magic, the city rose gleaming in the sun.

Dane Coolidge was an American author, naturalist, and photographer, born on March 24, 1873, in Massachusetts. His works often focused on the American West, capturing its landscapes, characters, and social dynamics. Coolidge wrote both fiction and non-fiction, contributing short stories to various magazines, as well as creating illustrations that complemented his literary work. His most notable works often depicted the rugged life of the West, exploring themes such as survival, adventure, and human resilience. His novel "Rimrock Jones" was adapted into a 1918 film, showcasing his influence on Western literature and cinema. Aside from his writing, Coolidge was also an avid photographer, documenting his travels and the natural beauty of the American landscape. He spent much of his later life in Berkeley, California, where he continued his creative pursuits until his death on August 8, 1940, at the age of 67. Coolidge's works remain a significant part of the literary exploration of the American frontier, and his contributions to both literature and photography have left a lasting mark on the portrayal of the West.
