This work offers a comparative study of two leading metaphysical poets, John Donne and George Herbert, in the light of what has been called by Ceri Sullivan the "rhetoric of conscience". Proffering a textual analysis of the paradigmatic poems, Batter my Heart and Virtue, this study examines in parallel the historical and biographical context that led to troubling the two poets' sensitive conscience.
