Partly condemning and partly admiring his devilish mentor, the pure-minded Don Joan's lurid "biography" of the Bearns is a testament to the eternal attractiveness of the libertine, and the lengths to which we go in justifying our own worst impulses.

Autorenporträt

Llorenc? Villalonga was born in Palma de Majorca in Spain in 1897 and died in 1980. Fluent in Spanish and Catalan, he wrote fifteen novels, five books of short stories, and five volumes of drama, in addition to over five hundred articles for newspapers and magazines. The Dolls' Room is widely considered to be his greatest work, and a masterpiece of post-war Catalan fiction. His nar-rative preoccupation with his personal and ancestral past has been compared to that of Marcel Proust and Giuseppe di Lampedusa.
