This is a book about two poets: the Greek Simonides (468-556), and the Romanian Paul Celan (1920-1970), the most important German-language poets of the twentieth century. Nullifying the time difference between them, Carsen reveals the juxtaposition between them, and exploits an economic concept, which is exchange, to begin an intellectual journey, in history, economics, poetry, philosophy, literary criticism, and translation.
