Idania Florez hails from a Spanish-speaking country and is a new citizen who speaks English as a second language. As she enters her classroom in a new school, Idania is welcomed by Brooke Gallagher, a friendly girl who helps her organize her desk and cubby. But as Idania settles in, she soon discovers that there are those who do not like her, just because of her nationality.

Even though her teacher, Mr. Jay, has already discussed the importance of being kind to others with her classmates, Idania is bullied by a few students who seem determined to make her life miserable.
