"The Enchanted April" by Elizabeth Von Arnim is a novel set in post-World War I England, following four women who take a month-long holiday in an Italian castle overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The women are all strangers to each other, but they all share a feeling of dissatisfaction with their lives and a longing for something more. Lotty Wilkins, a housewife, is the catalyst for the trip, and she persuades Mrs. Arbuthnot, a widow; Lady Caroline Dester, a beautiful but aloof socialite; and Mrs. Fisher, a dowager with a love of literature, to join her on the journey. Each woman has her own reasons for accepting the invitation, and as they settle into the castle, they begin to open up to each other and rediscover themselves. As they explore the beautiful Italian countryside and interact with the locals, they each experience a sense of transformation and renewal. The novel explores themes of friendship, love, and personal growth, as the women confront their own insecurities and learn to appreciate the beauty and joy in life. By the end of their enchanting April, the women have not only forged deep bonds with each other but also discovered new perspectives on their own lives, and have a newfound sense of hope and possibility for the future.

Autorenporträt
Elizabeth Von Arnim (1866-1941) was a British novelist and memoirist born in Australia. She was the daughter of a Scottish merchant and grew up in Europe. Her early works are set in Germany since she married a German aristocrat. She had a three-year affair with novelist H. G. Wells after the passing of her first husband, and they eventually married Frank Russell. Von Arnim published her first novel, "Elizabeth and Her German Garden," in 1898, which became a bestseller and made her a household name. She went on to write many more novels, including "The Enchanted April" (1922), which was adapted into a successful stage play and later a movie. Von Arnim's novels often explored themes of love, marriage, and social conventions, and were known for their wit and humor. She also wrote two memoirs, "All the Dogs of My Life" and "The Solitary Summer," which reflected on her love of nature and her experiences living in rural England. Von Arnim was a feminist and supported women's suffrage, and her writing often challenged traditional gender roles. She was also known for her philanthropic work, supporting various causes including animal welfare and education. Elizabeth Von Arnim died in 1941 at the age of 74, but her works continue to be read and loved by many today.
