It is the dawn of a new centurywith motor cars, electricity and telephones. The cowboy life is fading away, the days of driving cattle and horses to faraway markets are becoming evermore rare, and in 1901, Chili Wygant, then twenty-one years old, realizes that seven years after his family's death from smallpox, resulting in his nomadic existence as a saddle tramp, he needs to get off the prairies of Wyoming and pursue another way of life.

He finds a job as a busboy at The Majestic Hotel in Cheyenne, Wyoming, working his way up to chef in two years. By 1904, he has saved enough money to buy a train ticket to Los Angeles where he is determined to seek his fortune. On the train he meets Marisa Ramos, a Stanford University graduate, returning from Europe. Her father, Mateo Ramos, owns a vineyard and winery in the Santa Ynez Valley, east of Santa Barbara. Marisa invites Chili to visit and speak with her father about possible jobs in the culinary industry in Santa Barbara.

Mateo introduces Chili to Charles Grainger, an investor and winery owner at a ranch nearby. He's known as a heavy drinker and an exacting man, and owns many businesses in Santa Barbara, including a new restaurant he is about to open. After a short "trial by fire," to prove his worthiness, Chili is hired as senior chef of Grainger's Fine Dining, to great acclaim by Grainger's business associates, restaurant reviewers, and the customers.

The restaurant is a success and Chili asks Marisa to marry him. Mateo gives them his blessings but two months later, when Chili suggests it's time to choose their wedding rings, Marisa surprisingly backs away. They have a falling out. A few weeks later Chili relents and tries to contact her. On the evening of September 23, 1904, Mateo calls Chili to tell him Marisa is dead. She fell off her horse and tumbled down a hill. Neither Chili nor her best friend, Ella, believes it was an accident, as Marisa was an expert horsewoman. Chili has his suspicions of what happened which is partially confirmed by Marisa's stepmother, Katherine. Though grief-stricken, Chili attends her funeral and tries to console Mateo.

With Chili's assistance, Charles Grainger has acquired Russo's, a Sicilian fish restaurant in Monterey, and asks Chili to manage it. Chili leaves Santa Barbara to start a new life. At a grocery store before Thanksgiving, he bumps into Olivia Santiago, a nursing assistant he met at The Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, where his best friend, Elliott Faraday was recovering from an automobile accident. She is now working as a nurse in Monterey and living with her family. They become serious about each other.

Chili Wygant has endured many losses in his 24 years, but always bounces back. Will he find love again? Will he finally realize his goal of becoming a successful restaurateur? The End of the Trail reveals that and more.
