Because we do not want and cannot sever the connection between us and our past and present, and to the extent that we base our future life on our past and present life, we will protect ourselves from many of the dangers that arise from excess, misjudgment, surrender to illusions, and getting carried away with dreams. But the truly serious issue, which we must clarify for ourselves in a way that removes all doubt from it, protects it from all ambiguity, and clears it of all suspicion, is to know: Is Egypt from the East or from the West?!
