You cannot read one of the Apostle Paul's epistles without noticing that on every page he constantly points us toward the necessity of walking in the Spirit. He never lets up. The idea that all Christians should live their lives, down to the smallest detail, in a Spirit-led manner pervades the New Testament to such an extent that it almost overwhelms all other topics. Remember that the men who wrote the scriptures were inspired by the Holy Spirit. That means that, effectively, the scriptures were written by God. It is easy then for us to conclude that God is deeply concerned that His people learn to walk in His Spirit on a daily basis. That poses a problem for God. His people need an avenue to learn how to do that spiritual walk. We need to learn how to hear His voice. His solution is, well, bizarre. First, He fills us with His Spirit, and then He gives (makes available) to us the gift of tongues. This book discusses how the very strangeness of this odd gift contributes to its effectiveness in helping God's people learn to walk with Him.
