Thinking about volunteering with a healthcare team in a less-developed country? The need for global healthcare volunteers is critical. Yet, many healthcare professionals and students find the path to volunteering their services to be confusing and fraught with frustration. This book, based on Dr. Iserson's experiences teaching and practicing medicine on all seven continents, provides the nuts-and-bolts details necessary to ensure a successful international experience. Topics include finding the right organization; licensing & credentialing; travel documents, money, & customs regulations; food & living conditions; personal health & safety; international communication; packing; and using interpreters―all tailored for healthcare professionals and students. It also includes an extensive list of NGOs and other groups whose goals are to improve global medical care that accept volunteers. Perhaps most valuable, Dr. Iserson addresses the professional challenges volunteers may face when working in developing countries, illustrated by anecdotes from around the globe.
