Pearl was influenced by her old nanny, who told her Chinese tales and legends, by Teacher Kong, who taught her the Chinese language and the philosophy of Confucius, and by the Indian family doctor, who introduced her to Indian culture. The three played a pivotal role in her life and literature. She emerged alongside literature as an activist in the field of human rights.
