Autorenporträt
Harley Granville-Barker (1877-1946) was an English actor, director, playwright, and theatrical theorist who made significant contributions to the development of British drama and theatre during the early 20th century. Educated at the St Paul's School in London, Granville-Barker began his professional theatrical career as an actor, soon transitioning into directing where he was acclaimed for his innovative productions, particularly of Shakespeare's plays. His scholarly approach to direction, emphasis on realistic acting, and attention to the historical context of plays set him apart from his contemporaries. He was associated with the Royal Court Theatre and later the Duke of York's Theatre where he staged some of his landmark productions. As an author, Granville-Barker explored various aspects of theatre arts, with 'The Harlequinade: An Excursion' being a notable example of his literary work. Furthermore, he wrote prefaces to Shakespeare that have been considered as essential reading for the study of the Bard. His literary style was characterized by keen observation, critical insight, and an accessible, though scholarly, narrative voice. Granville-Barker played a pivotal role in the renewal of theatre practices, advocating for a modern approach to production and criticism, and his efforts helped lay the foundation for modern British theatre.
