During November of 1918, the Old Man, Luke's father was born in a farm house on a desolate two track dirt road east of a small Hamlet consisting of a few houses, a store, post office, grain elevator and church. The tradition that one would continue to farm was required. The early settlers came over from Germany in the 1670's arriving in the British Colonies before venturing out to establish homesteads for themselves in Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, Wisconsin and Michigan. German citizens were expelled from Germany during the later stages of World War II. First ethnic Germans were removed, second Germans voluntarily left the country and third an organized expulsion occurred. A young boy named Luke watched the transition of the family farm to the corporate take over with the corruption of bankers and attorneys closing down family farms while allowing corporate farms to grow in size. Once a farmer lost his land, he had no way to support himself. Luke meets an Alaskan Shaman who provides guidance for his continuing Spirit Journey to understand the event leading up to the Old Man's suicide. The Spirit of the Bear, Luke's grandfather joins the journey from the other side of life as ancestor dance around a tribal campfire.
