Sir Charles William Chadwick Oman, KBE, FBA (1860–1946), was a distinguished British historian known for his extensive work in the field of military and political history. Graduating from Oxford University, he pursued a scholarly career where he made significant contributions to the historiography of medieval and military history. In addition to his seminal work, 'The History of the Byzantine Empire,' Oman's erudition encompassed a variety of subjects, producing esteemed volumes such as 'A History of the Art of War in the Middle Ages' and 'The Dark Ages, 476-918,' which are highly regarded for their detailed research and analysis. His narrative style, characterized by lucidity and an engaging prose, rendered his historical accounts both scholarly and accessible to a broad readership. His authoritative voice in historical interpretation cemented his status as a leading historian of his era. Oman served as the president of the Royal Historical Society and was also appointed to the Order of the British Empire due to his scholarly achievements.
