Autorenporträt
Richard Cobbold (1797-1877) was an English novelist, artist, clergyman, and philanthropist best known for his popular novel 'The History of Margaret Catchpole, a Suffolk Girl' (1845). Born in Ipswich, Suffolk, to a well-established brewing family, Cobbold was educated at Trinity College, Oxford, before pursuing his calling in the church. As the Rector of Wortham in Suffolk for over fifty years, he was deeply embedded in the community, which served as a wellspring of inspiration for his literary works. Cobbold's writing is often characterized by its vivid portrayal of rural life and the social dynamics within his own society. 'The History of Margaret Catchpole' is a significant piece of his oeuvre, offering a semi-fictionalized account of an actual Suffolk woman who was convicted of horse theft and sentenced to transportation to Australia. Although the novel has been criticized for its factual inaccuracies, it was a Victorian sensation and painted a compelling picture of the era's social strata and criminal justice system. Cobbold's literary style combined didacticism with narrative entertainment, and his portrayal of moral virtues and life's vicissitudes resonated with contemporary audiences.
