Produktbeschreibung
In "The History of Sir Richard Calmady," Lucas Malet crafts an intricate narrative that intertwines themes of love, sacrifice, and social commentary within the backdrop of early 20th century England. The novel's literary style is characterized by Malet's rich, evocative prose and deep psychological insights, encapsulating the struggles of its titular character. Sir Richard, grappling with the dual burdens of aristocracy and physical disability, represents a poignant exploration of identity and societal expectations. Set against an era of rapid social change, the book reflects the conflicts between personal desire and public duty, masterfully navigating the chasm between privilege and vulnerability. Lucas Malet, a pseudonym for Katherine Mary Biddle, was deeply influenced by her upbringing in an elite family, which offered her a unique perspective on the complexities of class and gender. Malet's connections with prominent literary figures and her own experiences as a woman striving for autonomy in a patriarchal society informed her writing. Her keen observations of human behavior and emotional depth create a resonant exploration of the often-untold struggles of those marginalized by societal norms. This novel is recommended for readers interested in a profound and empathetic exploration of the human condition. Malet's skillful blend of character development and social critique makes it a significant contribution to the canon of feminist literature and a compelling testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Readers seeking an immersive literary experience will find "The History of Sir Richard Calmady" to be a rich and rewarding journey.

Autorenporträt
Lucas Malet (1852-1931) was the pseudonym of Mary St Leger Kingsley, a Victorian novelist. Of her novels, The Wages of Sin and The History of Sir Richard Calmady were especially popular. Malet's fin de siecle novels offer "detailed, sensitive investigations of the psychology of masochism, perverse desires, unconventional gender roles, and the body." Malet lived for most of her life on the Continent with the singer Gabrielle Vallings. Vallings, much younger than Malet, was the author's cousin, romantic companion and adopted daughter. The two traveled abroad frequently together, including spending significant time in France. Malet spent much of the end of her life in France where she was a part of "high literary circles." She wrote frequently during this time, often out of economic necessity. Despite her tremendous critical and economic success during the height of her career, Malet died in penury
