Pirates, corsairs, buccaneers, filibusters have already become the heroes of the adventure books. Quite often the sea robbers are represented as the romantic heroes in these books, the heroes who set off to the sea in search of the fortune because of the circumstances or because of the injustice of the government. However, in real life the history of pirates, which started in the remote times (Homer used to talk about the pirates) and they continue till our days, full of horrifying bloody pages and the pirates themselves quite often are represented as robbers, blackmailers and murderers, occupying not only the ships but the whole cities... Among the investigators of the pirates the specific place is by right given to the German historian Johann Wilhelm Archenholz. Two of his works "Die Geschichte der Flibustier» ("The History of Filibusters ») and "Die Geschichte der Bukaniere» ("The History of Buccaneers »), published in Tübingen in 1803 and 1804, narrate about the military operations, customs and traditions and everyday lives of the sea robbers of the Spanish America, Mediterranean Sea, Scandinavia and Dania and they are considered to be one of the best. In this publication the translation of these books is given, it is done in the second half of the XIX century by the literary man and translator K. E. Velsberger.
