William H. Hodgson, geb. 1877 in Essex als Sohn eines Geistlichen, verließ früh das Elternhaus und verbrachte viele Jahre auf See. Bei Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs kehrte er nach England zurück, meldete sich freiwillig und wurde 1918 durch eine Granate getötet.
