Dr Christopher Jameson is the highly respected British scientist leading Project Farsight, a highly classified European project to develop a three dimensional radar system. Professor Jameson is scheduled to attend a project meeting at offices in Florence when on arrival at Pisa Galileo Galilei airport he suddenly disappears. Concerned Dr Jameson has been taken by enemy agents, the Secretary of State for Defence orders Major Challenor, the officer commanding MI13, an obscure department within the Ministry of Defence responsible for covert operations, to send an agent to Italy. The task is to locate then recover Dr Jameson from whoever is holding him. Major Challenor sends Mike Harding, a former British soldier now assigned to MI13 as a deniable asset. Because of the scale and urgency of the task. Harding is accompanied by DI Annalisa Botelli and DI Dave Stephenson, both senior Special Branch officers from the Metropolitan Police on loan to MI13. When Harding and his colleagues learn Dr Jameson's kidnappers have agreed a price for him with the Russians, the operation to recover him becomes even more urgent. In addition to the Dr Jameson issue, a traitor has infiltrated the Project Farsight management team and is planning to sell project secrets to the highest bidder. Dr Jameson must be recovered before the Russians get him and the traitor caught before irreparable damage is done to Project Farsight.
