Freya Grace, a college student, went on vacation with five friends ten years ago and returned alone, the sole survivor of a horror movie-scale massacre. The three girls are all attempting to put their nightmares and, by extension, one another behind them. Despite the efforts of the media, they never meet.

Freya is now doing well-possibly even great-thanks to her Xanax prescription. She has a loving almost-fiancé named James, a popular baking blog, a lovely apartment, and a calming presence in August, the police officer who saved her life all those years ago. Her memory won't even allow her to recall what happened that night; the past is gone.

That is, until Sophie, the first The Last Girl, is discovered dead in her bathtub, her wrists slit, and Sam, the second The Last Girl, shows up on Freya's doorstep. Mack, who seems to be blowing through Freya's life like a whirlwind, appears to be intent on making Freya relive the past, with increasingly dire consequences, all of which makes Freya wonder why Mack is really looking for her. When new details about Sophie's death emerge, Freya's life becomes a race against time as she tries to separate Mack's truths from her lies, avoid the police and hungry reporters, and, most importantly, remember what really happened at Rams Cottage before what began ten years ago is completed.
