Washington Irving (April 3, 1783 - November 28, 1859) was an American short story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the 19th century. He is best known for his short stories 'Rip Van Winkle' (1819) and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' (1820), both of which appear in his collection 'The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.' His historical works include 'The Life of George Washington,' his five-volume biography of the first president of the United States, which was a culmination of Irving's long interest in the American Revolution and its primary leader. Irving's literary style combined elements of folklore and history, often imbuing his narratives with a sense of humor and satirical wit. He was among the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe, effectively bridging the cultural gap between the New World and the Old. Irving's contribution to American literature was substantial, helping to shape the identity and character of early American narrative and setting the foundation for a distinctive American literary voice. Besides 'The Life of George Washington,' Irving's other notable works include 'A History of New York' (1809), under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker, and 'Tales of the Alhambra' (1832), inspired by his travels in Spain.
