Euphemia MacKinnon lives secluded in the woods, unaware of the MacKinnon legend stating every forth generation since the first Lady MacKinnon sees visions when she comes of age, let alone that the legend speaks of her. Before her elderly friend, Maureen, died, Euphemia promised that when the time came, she would save Laird MacLeod after being ambushed so he may fulfill his destiny as one of the great MacLeod lairds.
Attacked and left for dead by a traitor, Laird Ross MacLeod is nursed back to health by a beautiful recluse. Euphemia lacks the skill of polite conversation and is frightened by strangers, especially men. As Ross strengthens, so does his affection for Euphemia, despite her clan being the enemy.
With Ross recovered, he reclaims his castle, and Euphemia returns to her home. Neither can get the other out of their minds despite knowing that, as enemies, they must. Then Ross discovers something about Euphemia. He realizes she is in danger, along with his heart.
