"e;THE MAN IN A CASE: Selected from Chekhov's Short Stories"e;: Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, a famous Russian novelist and playwright, was born in January 29, 1860 in the Russian city of Taganrog Postov province. Two generations of his father and his grandfather had been a serf. Relying on his diligence and wisdom, Chekhov's grandfather became a manager of his own landlord's sugar factory, and gradually accumulated a sum of money and finally in 1841 he redeemed his family. Chekhov's father later got married after receiving freedom and opened a grocery store in the local area for living. Anton Chekhov who later became a writer was the third child among the six children in his family. Father's store kept going by painstaking effort, and Chekhov's childhood life was difficult. Father was strict with his children and often beat and scolded them. Nevertheless, Chekhov was always very filial to his parents. In 1876, his father's store got bankrupt and the whole faminly had to move to Moscow to make a living. But Chekhov was studying at a French school at that time, so he chose to stay in his hometown on his own. In order to make a living, 16-year-old Chekhov went to school and became a part-time tutor at the same time. He graduated from high school in 1879 and admitted to the Department of Medicine, Moscow State University.
