In "The Man in the Queue," Josephine Tey crafts a gripping detective novel that intricately blends mystery with psychological depth. Set against the backdrop of post-war Britain, Tey's narrative delves into the complexities of human nature and the moral ambiguities faced by those entangled in crime. The seamless prose and richly drawn characters are punctuated by sharp dialogue, reflecting Tey's keen observation of society and her mastery of suspense. This work marks the debut of Scotland Yard's Inspector Alan Grant, whose intellectual acumen and intuitive approach to problem-solving set the tone for a series that would become foundational in the genre. Josephine Tey, born Elizabeth Mackintosh, was a dedicated playwright and novelist whose own life experiences deeply informed her worldview. An advocate for integrity and justice, Tey often infused her narratives with themes of social critique, reflecting the societal upheavals of her time. Her background in theater honed her skills in character development, lending multi-dimensionality to her protagonists and antagonists alike, all of which is evident in this early work. Readers seeking a thought-provoking and engaging mystery will find "The Man in the Queue" a captivating exploration of crime and morality. Tey's ability to weave complex narratives invites readers into a well-crafted world where the lines between right and wrong blur, making this book a must-read for mystery aficionados and those interested in the evolution of detective fiction.

Autorenporträt
Josephine Tey is one of the best-known and best-loved of all crime writers. She began to write full-time after the successful publication of her first novel, The Man in the Queue (1929), which introduced Inspector Grant of Scotland Yard. In 1937 she returned to crime writing with A Shilling for Candles, but it wasn't until after the Second World War that the majority of her crime novels were published. Josephine Tey died in 1952, leaving her entire estate to the National Trust.
Rezensionen
The Man In The Queue is as fresh and original as ever, 85 years on. Never one to tie herself to genre conventions, Tey builds on character and circumstances to create an enthralling cat-and-mouse hunt. Daily Mail
