Produktbeschreibung
In "The Maxwell Mystery," Carolyn Wells crafts a gripping narrative steeped in the conventions of early 20th-century detective fiction. This novel is set against the backdrop of a seemingly impenetrable crime, blending elements of suspense and deduction. Wells employs a meticulous, yet accessible literary style that engages readers through sharply delineated characterizations and clever plotting, typical of the era's mystery genre. The novel reflects the burgeoning interest in detective stories of the time, channeling the influence of contemporaries like Arthur Conan Doyle, while also introducing her unique voice that emphasizes wit and societal observation. Carolyn Wells, an American author and poet, was pioneering in the mystery genre, writing over 170 books throughout her career. Her keen interest in puzzles and the human psyche, along with her experiences in the literary circles of her time, shaped her narrative insights. It is noteworthy that Wells often drew inspiration from real-life criminal cases and her passion for unraveling enigmas, which provides a rich layer of authenticity in "The Maxwell Mystery." For readers enthralled by the golden age of detective fiction, "The Maxwell Mystery" serves as an excellent introduction to Carolyn Wells' work. The book'Äôs intricate plot and engaging protagonist invite readers to immerse themselves in a world of mystery, making it a compelling choice for both avid mystery aficionados and those newly embarking on their literary journey.

Autorenporträt
Carolyn Wells (1862 - 1942) was an American writer and poet. Carolyn Wells wrote a total of more than 170 books. During the first ten years of her career, she concentrated on poetry, humor and children's books. According to her autobiography, The Rest of My Life (1937), she heard That Affair Next Door (1897), one of Anna Katharine Green's mystery novels, being read aloud and was immediately captivated by the unraveling of the puzzle. From that point onward she devoted herself to the mystery genre. Among the most famous of her mystery novels were the Fleming Stone Detective Stories which-according to Allen J. Hubin's Crime Fiction IV: A Comprehensive Bibliography, 1749-2000 (2003)-number 61 titles. Wells's The Clue (1909) is on the Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone list of essential mysteries. She was also the first to conduct a (brief, in this case) annual series devoted to the best short crime fiction of the previous year in the U.S., beginning with The Best American Mystery Stories of the Year (1931) (though others had begun a similar British series in 1929).
