Rachel Mennies is the book reviews editor for AGNI and the series editor of the Walt McDonald First-Book Prize in Poetry at Texas Tech University Press.

The Naomi Letters is Mennies's second poetry collection. Her first collection, The Glad Hand of God Points Backwards (Texas Tech University Press, 2014), won the Walt McDonald First-Book Prize in Poetry and was a finalist for a National Jewish Book Award.

The Naomi Letters breathes a new life into the age-old epistolary format by centering the narrative around two women, with a particular focus on the intimacy, self-discovery, and release that comes from writing letters.

The Naomi Letters draws inspiration from the works of classic confessional poets like Sharon Olds, Adrienne Rich, and Anne Sexton, as well as contemporary writers Toi Derricotte, Maggie Nelson, and Sarah Manguso.

The Naomi Letters captures and distills the disappointments, anxiety, and uncertainty following the 2016 Presidential Election through the lens of a bisexual Jewish woman. Themes of anti-Semitism, homophobia/biphobia, and sexism are explored through the speaker's observations of their impact on her own life.

Strong appeal for booksellers with sections focused on feminist poetry, gender studies, LGBTQ memoir, and Jewish identity.

Mennies has strong regional connections in Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia. She plans to visit these cities during her book tour.

Rachel Mennies is the author of The Naomi Letters (BOA Editions, 2021) and The Glad Hand of God Points Backwards (Texas Tech University Press, 2014), winner of the Walt McDonald First-Book Prize in Poetry and finalist for a National Jewish Book Award. Her poems and essays have been published at The Believer, American Poetry Review, Kenyon Review, Poetry Foundation, and elsewhere. She serves as the book reviews editor for AGNI and the series editor, since 2016, of the Walt McDonald First-Book Prize in Poetry at Texas Tech University Press. Originally from the Philadelphia area, Mennies currently lives in Chicago, where she works as a writer, editor, and adjunct professor.
