The book seeks to investigate how legal and social norms influenced the structuration of fathers' positions, authority and power-a structuration embedded in the family context, the inner workings of the household, and the various social and political spaces outside the home - over a long period. The individual chapters offer in-depth looks at important areas where paternal power and authority were discursively modelled, established via legal acts, and implemented in social practice.
