Gustave Le Bon (1841-1931) was born near Chartres, studied medicine, and wrote on psychology and anthropology. He popularized theories of the unconscious mind and crowd psychology, which reportedly influenced Freud but also Hitler and Mussolini. In addition, he wrote The Evolution of Matter, a popular but controversial 1894 physics book on the aether theory.
