Sally heard footsteps and cringed back against the wall in fear. The heavy wooden door creaked open and a figure was silhouetted against the light. She couldn't see the face, but he was of stocky build and was wearing combat gear. She desperately tried to make out some feature so that she would recognise him again, but the light was too dim. 'Who are you?

Why am I here? What are you going to do? All these questions came tumbling out and Sally was on the edge of hysteria. The figure said nothing, just turned and walked out.

Maud Harris was born in Wales, left home at 20 to train as a nurse. She has since travelled extensively, living and working in Cyprus, Malta, Berlin, Singapore and most of West Germany. Now retired, she devotes her time to writing. Mostly novels with a medical/nursing theme, her autobiographical story 'Three Years in Starch' is available on Amazon.
