The pioneering English translation of Sakuntala in 1789 caused a sensation among European composers and writers (including Goethe), and it continues to be performed around the world. Autorenporträt

Kalidasa, der von ca. 315 bis 415 n.Chr. in der sogenannten GuptaKlassik gelebt hat, wird als der bedeutendste Dichter der klassischen indischen Literatur gehandelt. Über sein Leben gibt es wenig Belegtes, doch nach der Legende genoß er praktisch keine Ausbildung. Er produzierte lyrische Epen, wie den bekannten Meghaduta, den Wolkenboten, sowie drei große Dramen, von denen Sakuntala das berühmteste außerhalb Indiens ist. So wurde es früh in die Kultursprachen übersetzt, 1789 erstmals ins Englische, was die Basis für eine Übersetzung ins Deutsche des gelehrten Weltreisenden Georg Forster war.
