Morris Jastrow Jr. (1861-1921) was an esteemed American orientalist and librarian, recognized primarily for his significant contributions to the study of the history of religions, particularly in the context of the ancient Near East. Born into an intellectual family, his father was a rabbi, which provided him with a strong foundation in religious scholarship from an early age. Jastrow pursued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he later served as a professor of Semitic languages, and ultimately obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Leipzig. His erudition was not limited to academia; he also held the position of librarian at the University of Pennsylvania for an extended period. Jastrow's research focused on Assyriology, and through his linguistic prowess, he deftly translated numerous Babylonian texts. His writings reveal a methodical approach, and his literary style is characterized by clarity and comprehensiveness, often synthesizing complex ideas into accessible narratives.
