Set in Senegal in the late 1970's, The Remarkable Conversion of Abdou Diouf relates the 'remarkable' struggles of its title character, a widower peanut farmer, and his oldest daughter, Khady, who is leaving for six months of medical training to become her village's maternitrice. Father and daughter set out for the city of Diourbel via bush taxi in the midst of the harmattan winds known to the Wolof as mboyuu. The resulting dust storm creates a series of life-and-death challenges that sorely test Abdou's Mouride-based faith as well as Khady's physical and emotional stamina. The story culminates with Khady's return to the village of Darou Diouf after completing her training whereupon she witnesses her father's conversion to a renewed commitment to life over fatalism--(equivalent to 105 pages of printed text).
