What if you were no longer totally human?
Sixteen-year-old Kyra Agnew has lost a lot. She's had to flee the only home she's ever known, even though it's no longer recognizable. She's being hunted by the Daylighters, a shadowy government organization that will experiment on her if given the chance. And she's had to offer up Tyler, the boy she loves, to the same forces that stole the last five years of her life and sent her back slightly . . . changed. It's true, she can now heal incredibly fast, see in the dark, and hold her breath underwater for much longer than normal, and she may possibly have some kind of weird telekinetic powermaking her different from any of the other Returned. But alien abduction or not, deep down, she's still the same girl, right?
The more time Kyra spends with Simon and the rest of her fellow Returned, the harder it is to deny: she can never go back to who she was. Even worse, maybe she was never that girl to begin with. As Kyra struggles to accept the truth, the one thing she can control is who she is now. And that is someone who will stop at nothing to save those she cares about.
When Simon intercepts a message that the Daylighters might have Tyler, Kyra and her friends launch a rescue mission. Walking into the lion's den is never a good idea, but Kyra won't abandon Tyler to a fate worse than death. Even if he never forgives her for what she did. And even if she never makes it out alive.
