Historian Karel Davids analyzes the technological leadership of the Dutch Republic from the late Middle Ages to the early 19th century. Already in the 17th century, at the very beginning of the New Age, the Republic of the United Provinces became a European and world trade center, a leader in cartography, medicine, natural sciences, and painting. The author has studied a huge amount of European archival materials and historical sources to explain the rise and fall of the technological progress of the Netherlands and at the same time to identify the main factors of leadership in general.
