In The Roper Robbers, young Andy Quinn arrives at manhood after a long process begun in the first book of the series, 'Pecos is Missing', where Andy goes looking for his pa after Pecos doesn't return to the cattle drive after going in search of the men who rustled a few cows from them.
In the next book, they've gotten the cows to Abeline, but Pecos is still hurt and Andy refuses to leave his pa.
When his pal, Hasty, talks him into going to a saloon, he meets a young girl dressed like a boy, stealing money from drunks. It turns into a powerful connection. Jo is older than she looks and lives with her grandpa in a stable he owns until suddenly, Grandpa dies. Jo is on her own and she must run the stable.
While his pa slowly recovers, Andy helps this girl, until he gets a job with the Pinkertons. He's doing good. He and Jo grow closer.
Then in book three, 'The Roper Robbers', Andy hits his stride with the Pinkertons. It seems he has a knack for this kind of work, and after another train robbery, Andy tracks the crooks to the ranch and is a big part of the sting operation to nab them. In the middle of this excitement, Andy takes a break to marry Jo, the woman he loves. And then it's back to work.
