Jo is older than she looks and lives with her grandpa in a stable he owns until suddenly, Grandpa dies. Jo is on her own and she must run the stable.

While his pa slowly recovers, Andy helps this girl, until he gets a job with the Pinkertons. He's doing good. He and Jo grow closer.

Then in book three, 'The Roper Robbers', Andy hits his stride with the Pinkertons. It seems he has a knack for this kind of work, and after another train robbery, Andy tracks the crooks to the ranch and is a big part of the sting operation to nab them. In the middle of this excitement, Andy takes a break to marry Jo, the woman he loves. And then it's back to work.

Autorenporträt

John came west as a young man and settled in Berkeley where he graduated from the University of California. He still lives and writes there and often gives a talk on the California gold rush to the gang at the Freight and Salvage.

He spent a lot of time digging into that gold rush too and many of his stories take place back then. John's characters are so real they'll jump right off the page and talk to you; his villains have hearts as cold as midnight and his heroes almost always do the right thing in the end.
