The Round Prairie Wars is a coming-of-age story set on the Great Plains in 1953 during the Red Scare. Jeb Wilder, a nine-year-old girl, faces battles on every front, living in a trailer house with a schizophrenic mother in a small town determined to ostracize anyone perceived as different. While her mother drags Jeb into a world of shifting realities and vivid hallucinations, she also protects her with poetry and word games. Meanwhile, Round Prairie moves toward a horrendous incident which disguises small-town bigotry as the purge of 'Communists' to maintain the social structure and its treasured ideologies. But with the help of her brother and a few unlikely friends, Jeb manages to build a life like the survivors of a nearby tornado, from pieces of rubble, broken and random, but uniquely hers.
