FiveCircleUp has to undertake one desperate mission after another to try and free his world of the human plague. He has to use skills no human has seen a keda use in hundreds of their generations. He has to overcome the resistance of his own kind on many occasions, though what he needs to do is for their own good.

The Pronna world of Om and one of it's prime individuals have to face the effects of what they've done when they are brought before the galactic council to answer for the spreading infestation of humans in the galaxy. Om wants to defend their discovery and use them to study the process of a species discovering technology, though they know even if all the Pronna worlds united they could not save them from the Rendor and maybe not even the Rikaviks. Even the Weineh grumble about a possible militaristic species nearly on their doorstep.

Oblivious to that, Esher finds the woman of his dreams on the way to a festival, and they spend two decades building and planning a wonderful life together. Their only problem, the tendency of their keda to stray on them. They never find out what he has in store for them until too late when all their plans are dashed.

Deep in the shadows of Om's floating forest, the vermin fear the painwall. But then they learn of a much grander destiny for their kind, and Nulf vows to achieve it.

This is probably closest to traditional 'Science Fiction' of the Kassidor stories. This story is full of aliens, galactic politics, and innocent species caught in the middle, one of which is humans. On the other hand this is (mostly) a lighthearted love story, between man and woman, and between keepers and their pets.

This should be of interest to anyone who wants to take a step back from the way we see ourselves and look at the human race and the human condition as we might appear to a species a billion years more advanced than we are, and as we might appear to one a million years behind our own. This offers a view of what might happen if we really had contact with the remainder of the galaxy.

Also in here is a possible answer to the Fermi paradox, 'Where are they?' since any species that learns to cross space should settle the entire galaxy in the time it would take to rotate on its axis. Maybe they already have, maybe in the ancient past.

Autorenporträt
I am a retired embedded systems engineer and sci-fi hobbyist from Hartford. Most of my stories concern Kassidor, 'The planet the hippies came from' which I have used to examine subjects like: What would it take to make the hippy lifestyle real? How would extended lifespans affect society? What could happen if we outlive our memories? How can murder be committed when violence is impossible?

I have recently discovered that someone new to science fiction should start their exploration of Kassidor with the Second Expedition trilogy. To the mainstream fiction reader the alien names of people, places and things can be confusing. This series has a little more explanation of the differences between Kassidor and Earth. In all of the Kassidor stories you will notice the people do not act like ordinary humans but like flower children from the 60's. It is not until Zhlindu that the actual modifications made to human nature to make them act that way are spelled out. To aide that understanding I've made The Second Expedition free.

I am not a fan of violence and dystopia. I believe that sci-fi does not just predict the future, but helps create the future because we sci-fi writers show our readers what the future will be and the readers go out and create it. I believe that the current fad of constant dystopia and mega-violence in sci-fi today is helping to create that world, and I mention that often in reviews and comments on the books I read. I also believe that the characters in those stories who are completely free of any affection are at least as unnatural as the modified humans of Kassidor.

In my reviews, * = couldn't finish it. ** = Don't bother with it. *** = good story worth reading. **** = great and memorable story. ***** = Worth a Hugo.
