Nathan R. Wood first came to Gordon to fill in for a theology professor who got sick at the last minute. Before becoming a pastor in Medford, MA, Dr. Wood studied at Harvard, Newton Theological Institute, and in Germany. He was well-prepared for this new job and did well as a teacher and supervisor at the College from 1908 until 1910, when he became the Dean of the School. Dr. Wood held this job for nine years. During that time, the College's accreditation grew, and the state of Massachusetts gave the College permission to give degrees in education, theology, and religion. In 1919, Wood was chosen as president by the Board of Trustees. Isabel Warwick Wood, who was married to him, was also very important to the school. She was the dean of faculty and oversaw the growing curriculum. She also taught literature and French, among other things. Dr. Wood's strong commitment to community involvement brought in new donors to Gordon. This gave the growing school, which had just moved to the Fenway in Boston, the money it needed to build new buildings and grow.
