The sentinel lymph node concept is meeting with steadily growing interest and is being extended to the different sites of the primaries. In addition, the concept is being applied in an increasingly sophisticated manner. In this book the practical application of the sentinel node concept is evaluated from the points of view of pathology, radiodiagnosis and nuclear medicine diagnostics, surgical treatment and clinical oncology. The concept is analyzed for breast cancer, malignant melanoma, tumors of the face, oropharynx, lung, gastrointestinal and urogenital tract. The first part of the book describes the function and use of the nuclear medicine equipment, the tracers used, colloid solutions and modern developments in histological and immunohistochemical lymph node investigations, as well as possible pitfalls. The consequences of false-negative results are clearly delineated. In the second part, specific tumor-related problems are described.
From the reviews:
Br J Surg (2005) 92 (4) p. 495: "This is a book not only for surgeons but also for other specialists for whom regional tumour growth has implications for treatment. The whole spectrum...is fully covered in 33 chapters. I can wholeheartedly recommend this book to those whose practice requires the diagnosis and treatment of locoregional malignant disease."
RAD Maganzine, Sept. 2005: " I was surprised by the extent to which sentinel lymph node biopsy has been extended from melanoma and breast cancers to head and neck, lung, upper GI tract, gynaecological, penile, testicular and urinary tract, including prostate cancers....a beautifully produced book with magnifcent colour pictures and drawings.
"Anyone involved in sentinel lymph node biopsies would be well advised to obtain a copy of this book. A balanced viewpoint is given about the value of this concept and how the indications vary throughout the medical world. ... a beautifully produced book with magnificent colour pictures and drawings. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in sentinel lymph nodes ... ." (Dr. P Dyson, RAD Magazine, September, 2005)
"It deals with the sentinel node concept even in tumours in which this node receives little attention in everyday practice. ... This is a book not only for surgeons but also for other specialists for whom regional tumour growth has implications for treatment. ... Its illustrations ... are of high quality and the references are up to date. ... I can whole-heartedly recommend this book to those whose practice requires the diagnosis and treatment of locoregional malignant disease." (T. Wobbes, The British Journal of Surgery, Vol. 92(4), 2005)
"This book focuses on the sentinel node (SN) concept. ... This book is well written and easily understandable for nuclear medicine physicians, surgeons, oncologists, physicists and all the other different specialists interested in SN detection. The textcontains comprehensive information on this field ... . In conclusion, this book can be considered a good piece of work that is to be recommended to all readers who would like to have an exhaustive and up-to-date manual on this very important nuclear medicine procedure." (E. Bombardieri, European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, Vol. 33 (1), 2006)
