Autorenporträt
Robert Ervin Howard (1906-1936) was an American author of pulp fiction, who is best known for creating the character Conan the Barbarian, an iconic figure in the genre of sword and sorcery. Born in Peaster, Texas, Howard spent most of his life in the town of Cross Plains, with a brief stint in Brownwood. A bookish child with a love of history and epic tales, Howard began writing professionally at the age of 15. His work initially appeared in a wide range of pulp magazines, but he is most closely associated with 'Weird Tales' magazine. Howard's literary style is characterized by vivid and energetic prose, with a flair for swift, gripping narratives and strong, brooding characters. 'The Shadow of the Vulture,' while not as well-known as his Conan tales, nevertheless exemplifies Howard's penchant for robust historical fiction, blending actual history with his distinctive storytelling. Though his life was tragically cut short by suicide at the age of 30, Howard's legacy endures through his influential body of work, which has been widely recognized for its seminal role in shaping modern fantasy literature.
